Born in Sheffield, Richard studied painting at Sheffield College of Art and the Royal College of Art. He taught print making and published his own work before rediscovering watercolour. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Barbican Centre and in Europe and the USA. He is inspired by the natural world especially the North Yorkshire coastline. Often working in a series he attempts to invoke the life and atmosphere that absorb him. Contemporary images of earth, air, wind, and rain and sea, sky, feathers and flight can be found amongst his work.
