Penny Mclean

<Back to Artists>

Penny McLean studied under Sir William Gillies and Sir Robin Phillipson at Edinburgh College of Art and her style is strongly influenced by her early exposure to Scottish Painting. She also found inspiration in the paintings of Joan Eardley, whose work she much admires. The Scottish Painters’ love of colour, texture, expressive brushwork and the natural rhythms of the landscape are reflected in her work.She is drawn to the more unusual aspect rather than the obvious (the back yard or the gently crumbling barn) and the contrast of the quality of light in different parts of the world; be it the brilliance and clarity of light in the Mediterranean countries, the softer tones of the Wolds or the luminescence of the sea and the vivid colours of bracken and lichen up on the north-east coast of Scotland.She has shown work in several Yorkshire Galleries and, in June, was again ‘Artist in Residence’ at Burton Agnes Hall.

Penny studied art at the Edinburgh College of Art and subsequently taught art at a girls grammar school in Leeds. In between bringing up a family and teaching evening classes she began painting again and has exhibited regularly at Hull, Scarborough, Scunthorpe and Lincoln as well as being an established member of the Wetherby Art Loan Scheme. She has work in private collections in the UK and France
